Safety and safeguarding

Safeguarding and Prevent

Myerscough College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students including young people and those with additional needs.  We also recognise that we have a duty to help students to understand their responsibilities through guidance and support.  As a student and resident at Myerscough, it is important that you understand your responsibilities and what safeguarding means to you.

What is Safeguarding?

Everyone must take reasonable measures to ensure that the risks of harm to any individual are minimised.  Any student can become vulnerable at any time and as such, safeguarding arrangements cover all students.

What is Prevent?

Prevent is a government strategy about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of all types of extremism and radicalisation, including terrorism.  It is also about the promotion of British Values.

If you have any concerns regarding yourself or any other student, it is your responsibility to report these to the Designated Learner Safeguarding and Prevent Team (see Useful Telephone Numbers section for contact details).

For further information, see the Safeguarding and Prevent in Residency Essential Guide.

If you Need Something

Help and Advice

Student life is a lot more than studying and exams!  As well as discovering new friends and new experiences, it’s a transition period that takes you into a new phase of your life.  So, if you find you need any information, advice and guidance along the way, just come and talk to the friendly team in The Core!  The Core is open term time Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.00pm, Friday 8.30am-4.30pm, and is your one stop shop for all student enquires.  There is a range of support facilities specifically designed to help you on your journey including access to welfare and health care professionals, counsellors, chaplaincy (for all faiths and none), careers, and financial matters.  If you have a question and you’re not sure who to ask then please don’t be afraid to visit The Core, located in the centre of campus.  There is also a list of a number of support organisations and contact details at the end of this booklet.

First aid

All the Residential Support team are first aid trained and can assist you with minor injuries.  In addition, there are also a number of fully trained first aiders whose places of work are throughout the campus with first aid boxes in key areas.  There are four defibrillators held on the Preston campus and they are situated in Residency and the Plant Centre, Sports Centre and Equine.  If you require first aid outside of academic time, you should contact one of the Residential Support team.

Illness

If you are ill and require a doctor's/nurse's appointment, you will need to go to see support staff in The Core during normal Core opening hours 8.30am-4.30pm Monday-Friday. Outside of these hours, please contact a Residential Support Officer.

The staff will support you with a number of options which may include a telephone communication consultation or an appointment for you to attend the surgery. Transport will be arranged to Garstang Medical Practice if required.

The College has agreed with Garstang Medical Practice to have set afternoon appointments reserved for Myerscough College students Monday-Friday. Out of hours medical advice can also be provided by the pharmacy team linked to Garstang Medical Practice. The pharmacy will continue to deliver approved prescriptions to the Core for you to colelct during normal Core opening times.

It is strongly recommended that you register with the practice whilst living at College. You can follow the link to find out more about the Garstang Medical Practice

Repair, Maintenance and Fault Reporting

If any items in your room or the communal areas are broken, damaged or faulty, these should be reported to the Residential Operations team:

  • in person during office hours to the Residential Operations Assistant whose office is located upstairs above the Minimarket
  • by e-mail to resrepairs@myerscough.ac.uk
  • by telephone on 01995 642139

When e-mailing, you should make sure that you include your name and room/hall details as well as full details of the fault.  Please be as detailed as possible!

Repairs are carried out on a priority basis and you will receive a text message once the repair is completed.  If you require an update on process with a repair, please ask.

Emergencies outside of office hours should be reported to a Residential Support Officer.

You are not allowed to make your own repairs to the premises or make any adjustments to it, such as replacing or attaching fittings to shower heads, painting walls, hanging pictures/mirrors/hooks, etc. Furthermore, you should never tamper with safety features such as window restrictors or smoke detectors which are in place to protect you.  These are a disciplinary offence.

The College reserves the right to enter residential areas - including bedrooms - for the purpose of effecting necessary repairs, maintenance schedules and redecoration, or for safety and fire checks.  Inspections to check the general condition of rooms and to identify any faults also take place at regular intervals.  Wherever possible prior notice of visits will normally be given.

Security

The Residential Support team are here to ensure your safety at all times.  If you are concerned about your safety or security, please contact them on 07889754287.
